Davenport and the Quad Cities: one market, two states

Davenport is the largest of the Quad Cities, sharing a riverfront metro with Bettendorf on the Iowa side and Rock Island and Moline in Illinois. The ag-equipment industry runs deep here (John Deere's world headquarters sits just across the river in Moline), the Rock Island Arsenal is a major federal employer, and the Figge Art Museum and a rebuilt downtown give Davenport more urban texture than most Iowa cities. Functionally it is one labor market and one shopping market of roughly 400,000 people that happens to straddle a state line.

That bi-state structure is the whole marketing problem. Service businesses routinely serve both banks of the river, so campaigns limited to Iowa amputate half the demand, and local SEO has to rank for Quad Cities phrasing as much as for Davenport alone.
